    These videos are great! But I'd have tensioned the topping lift first (to make it easier to raise the sail) then eased it after (to put the weight of the boom onto the sail and so give the sail a nice efficient shape).

    It's because of the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient between brass and iron. That's the right explanation. Not because brass is softer than iron.

    I am convinced the cannonball rack was named a "brass monkey" the moment after an officer overheard one of the men said it was cold enough to freeze the balls off a monkey, 100% meaning the animal, and demanded an explanation
